VAT will not be imposed on water, electricity and medicine, State Minister of Finance Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said.

This announcement came days after President Maithripala Sirisena lashed out at economic advisers who plan economic strategies without giving priority to the people's needs.

The government had on April 15 announced a VAT increase to 15 percent for all sectors.
