Wigneswaran Issued Notice To Appear In Supreme Court

Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran and three others were issued notice to appear in Supreme Court on May 12, 13 and 17, over a petition filed against the recently passed resolution calling for a federal solution.

The other respondents are the leader of ITAK Mavai Senathirajah, NPC Chairman C.V.K. Sivagnanam and NPC Secretary S. Pathmanathan.

A lawyer recently filed a petition with the Supreme Court challenging the resolution, seeking an opinion on it. The petitioner argued that the resolution was putting forward the ITAK agenda to divide the country.

NPC Chairman CVK Sivagnanam said that he received the notice and was discussing the matter with his lawyers. He also added that the resolution was not passed with any objective of dividing the country.

Speaking of the request to merge the northern and eastern province, he said that it was nothing new. The two provinces had been merged for a long period of time, he added.
