Former Minister, former Governor of the Western Province and trade union leader Alavi Moulana has passed away at the age of 84.

He was receiving treatment at a private hospital in Colombo.

Moulana entered politics in 1948 as a trade unionist and went on to serve as a councilor in the Colombo Municipal Council and also as a Cabinet Minister under the People's Alliance government.

After the election of Maithripala Sirisena as President, Moulana continued to support former President MAhinda Rajapaksa.

Moulana's funeral will be held at the Dehiwala Jummah Mosque at 3.30 pm tomorrow (16).
