Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Vows Judicial Action Against Arrest Of Udaya Gammanpila

The Pivithuru Hela Urumaya today vowed that it will take legal action against the arrest of its General Secretary Udaya Gammanpila.

Speaking at a press conference today, party Spokesperson Thushara Dissanayake said that the government has arrested Gammanpila over allegedly false complaints.

When he was arrested, Gammanpila wrote a Facebook update, in which he claimed that he was arrested on a Saturday to keep him behind bars at least a few days. The investigators who questioned him merely 48 hours before his arrest had told that there was no reason for them to arrest him, Gammanpila said.

Gammanpila was questioned by the SIU on two occasions for allegedly using a fraudulent power of attorney to sell assets in Sri Lanka which belonged to Brian Shaddick of Western Australia. The incident is said to have happened in 1997.

He was arrested on June 18 and was remanded till July 1.

Meanwhile, a Fundamental Rights petition filed by Gammanpila seeking an order against his arrest is to be heard on June 23.
