Democratic Party leader Sarath Fonseka is to formally join the UNP in the coming days, political sources said.

Furthermore, the Democratic Party is likely to be dissolved once Fonseka joins the UNP.

The UNP and the DP came to an agreement earlier in the year and Fonseka was appointed through the UNP National List to Parliament. He was later appointed Minister of Regional Development.

The Democratic Party has seen its fortunes dwindling rapidly after a relatively promising start a few years back. It won several seats in Provincial Council elections but was rocked by several desertions thereafter. The party could not win any seats in the 2015 General Elections.
