Sarath Fonseka Joins UNP, Appointed Kelaniya Chief Organizer

Regional Development Minister Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka accepted membership of the UNP from Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Sirikotha UNP party headquarters a short while ago.

Fonseka was also appointed the UNP Chief Organizer of Kelaniya Electorate in the Gampaha District.

Speaking to media yesterday, Fonseka had confirmed of his decision to accept the organizer post in Kelaniya.

Fonseka contested the 2010 Presidential Election with the support of the UNP and was arrested days after his defeat at the election. After being released, he formed the Democratic Party. Fonseka backed Maithripala Sirisena at the 2015 Presidential Election and contested the August 2015 General Election under the Democratic Party ticket. His party did not win any seats.

Fonseka joined the government earlier this year after signing an agreement with the UNP.
