Media Ministry Goes Haywire Over CB Governor's Appointment

The Ministry of Mass Media and Information and the Government Information Department have apparently gone haywire in the aftermath of the confusion surrounding the appointment of the Central Bank Governor.

The Government Information Department, this morning (01), sent out a news release saying that the President would make a decision on the appointment of the new Central Bank Governor after Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake's return to the country.

An hour later, the Department, unofficially, contacted all media outlets, requesting them  not to use the media release on the Central Bank Governor's appointment.

Interestingly, a few hours later, the Ministry of Mass Media issued a statement, saying the Government Information Department did not release any statement on the Central Bank Governor's appointment. The statement found fault with some media outlets who published the statement.

The statement was signed by Nimal Bopage, Secretary to the Ministry of Mass Media.

However, the news release issued this morning had the Government Information Department's logo and it was sent to all newsrooms by the department via fax.

When contacted. a senior official at the ministry said they were also in a state of confusion, like everyone else in the country, over the Central Bank Governor's matter.
