Private Bus Strike Called Off After Discussions With President

The islandwide private bus strike which was scheduled from midnight tonight was called off following discussions with President Maithripala Sirisena.

The private bus owners' unions had earlier called an islandwide strike over a 15 percent bus fare increase and other demands.

However, members of the unions met President Maithripala Sirisena this morning to hold a special discussion. The unions agreed to call off the strike after the President agreed that bus fares should be revised.

Another special meeting would be held next week with the participation of the President, the Prime Minister, the Transport Minister and the unions.
