Maithri Reiterates Commitment To Fully Abolish Presidency: Rubbishes 'Constitutional Deathtrap' Claims

President Maithripala Sirisena reiterated his commitment to fully abolish Executive Presidency with comprehensive constitutional reforms.

He gave this assurance, addressing the Dharmasiri Senananayake commemoration ceremony, in Kegalle, today.

He said changing the current constitution was a timely need and the SLFP, over the years, had pushed for it.

The President also lashed out at those who dub the reform process as a "constitutional deathtrap".

"They sit at meetings where we discuss constitutional reforms. They don't utter a word against it. The moment they step out, they start shouting about constitutional deathtraps," the President said, directing his criticism at the UPFA rebel group.

The President also added that the Sri Lankan politics had lost "gentlemen' of the late Dharmasiri Senanayake's caliber.
