Swiss Authorities Yet To Inform Of Any Change To Geetha Kumarasinghe's Citizenship, Court Informed

The Court of Appeal was today informed that the Swiss authorities are yet to confirm that UPFA MP Geetha Kumarasinghe has disowned her Swiss citizenship.

This was stated by Attorney-at-Law J.C. Weliamuna, during the hearing of a writ petition filed against Kumarasinghe. Weliamuna appeared on behalf of the petitioners.

Since she still was a dual citizen, Kumarasinghe becomes ineligible to occupy a seat in Parliament under the provisions introduced to the constitution of the country through the 19th Amendment, it was also argued.

Five residents from Galle have filed the writ petition against Kumarasinghe, requesting the Appeals Court to disqualify her as a Member of Parliament on the grounds that she is a dual citizen of Sri Lanka and Switzerland.

Kumarasinghe was elected to the Parliament in August 2015 from the UPFA ticket from Galle District.
