Laborers Engage In Office Activities Of Local Authorities, Says Minister Faiszer Musthapha

At a discussion held by the Minister of Provincial Council and Local Government with the officers of Local Authorities, it was revealed that laborers are engaged in office activities in many Local Government Institutions.

Musthapha initiated a program to discuss with the officers about issues and future plans of Local Authorities who had their terms ended.

Accordingly the first discussion was held with the officers of Local Authorities in Colombo district. Officers pointed out that there is a lack of laborers to collect garbage in most of the Local Authorities. The reason for this is identified as the people who have been recruited as sanitary laborers, are engaged in office work. Officers revealed that some of the sanitary laborers collect garbage while some sanitary laborers work in offices.

Musthapha instructed officers to take immediate steps to deploy sanitary labors infield work. He stated that his Ministry is receiving a lot of complaints regarding non collection of garbage. As garbage is not collected properly and regularly they get collected causing epidemic diseases. And same post bearers engaging in two different duties is not fair, Minister Musthapha said. If they have the required qualifications, they should be appointed for the proper post. If not, it will be difficult to carry on the process of collecting garbage which is one of the main duties done by the Local Authorities, the minister insisted.
