UNP MP Palitha Thewarapperuma will hand over his letter of resignation to opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at 10 am tomorrow.
Thewarapperuma says he will resign from parliament in protest of the Police Cheif's inaction on violent clashes erupted in Aluthgama, Beruwala and Dharga Town three weeks ago.
Thewarapperuma announced his resignation last week while stating that IGP N K Illangakoon should take immediate action in this regard.
In his letter of resignation Thewarapperuma has stated that his decision would setup an example for other politicians to stay true to their words and live up to the expectations of the people.
When contacted by Asian Mirror a senior UNP parlimentarian said the party has not taken any decision to accept Thewarapperuma's letter of resignation. It is also learned that a group of UNP parliamentarians will present a motion to the party urging the opposition leader to reject Thewarapperuma's letter.
Palitha Thewarapperuma was assaulted by a mob during the Aluthgama clash when he attempted to transport several injured Muslims to hospitals. While making a special statement in parliament, Thewarapperuma added that the government should be held responsible for the acts committed by Bodu Bala Sena.
Sources close to Thewarapperuma confirmed Asian Mirror that the parliamentarian was firm on his decision to sacrifice his parliamentary seat over the incident.
