Case Against Sarath De Abrew Terminated By Colombo High Court

September 14, 2016

The case against former Supreme Court Justice Sarath de Abrew over the alleged assault of a maid servant was terminated today by Colombo High Court Judge Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne.

The case was terminated since the accused passed away recently.

The Attorney General filed indictment against Abrew in November 2015 on two counts on committing grave sexual abuse, under Section 365 (B) of the Penal Code.

He died after falling from the top story of his house on August 15, 2016.

The High Court today considered a request by his lawyer and announced that he remains innocent at the time of the termination of the case as he had not been found guilty by any court for the case involved. His lawyer, President's Counsel Tirantha Walaliyadde made the request pointing out that it was a constitutional right of his client to be pronounced innocent and that it is important due to all the negative media reports against him.
