Damage To Military Intelligence Hard To Repair: Maj Gen. Kamal Gunaratne

September 20, 2016

Retired Major General Kamal Gunaratne said that the morale of the military intelligence officers have slumped due to the treatment meted out to certain officers of the military intelligence corp.

Taking part in the 360 political talk show on Derana TV, Gunaratne said that damage to the intelligence corp cannot be repaired in a short term. They have now become indifferent and are just carrying out what they are told, he added.

Gunaratne pointed out that Sri Lankan army used to have a very incompetent intelligence corp before it was reformed and proper training was given. Thereafter it carried out daring operations, such as bringing down Kumaran Pathmanathan from Malaysia. Some of the operations done by the intelligence corp are on par with operations of the most famous intelligence units in the world, he added.

Intelligence officers are important to identify any possible resurgence of terrorism, he said, adding that terrorism, if it resurfaces, will not appear out of the blue. Therefore, the destruction of the morale of the intelligence corp will be dangerous to the country, he added.
