Navy Soldier Expelled For Ties With 'Buddhist Extremist Organizations'

A Sri Lanka Navy soldier said that he was recently expelled from the navy for alleged ties with 'Buddhist extremist organizations' in a decision which left him baffled.

Muditha Kaushalya Samaranayake Vidanagamage from Akuressa in Matara District joined the navy in 2008. Early this year, he had taken some photographs at the Nilaveli camp. These photographs had leaked out and he claims he was not responsible for it.

Speaking to a weekend newspaper, he said that he took the photographs during an examination of the land by the Surveyor Department officials. He claims there were other civilians who had entered the camp unauthorized, which led him to suspect that something illegal was taking place.

However, he was later arrested, tried and expelled dishonorably from the navy, he told the weekend newspaper.
