Kalutara Police Chief Transferred One Month After Aluthgama Clash

More than three weeks after anti-Muslim clashes in Aluthgama, Beruwala and Dharga Town, IGP N.K. Illangakoon has transferred a senior Police officer who overlooked security in the area.

Sources of the Police Department confirmed Asian Mirror that SP Roshan Silva who overlooked security of Kalutara Police division has been transferred to Colombo Crimes Division with immediate effect.

He has been replaced by SSP Kithsiri Kodithuwakku who has been appointed as the new Police chief of Kalutara.

Police department also took measures to transfer OIC of Aluthgama Police station Kavinda Piyasekera just a few days after the clash. Chief Inspector R.P.K.A. Jayampathi was  appointed as the new Officer in Charge of the Aluthgama Police.

However, opposition Parliamentarian Palitha Thewarapperuma categorically stated that Police Chief N.K. Illangakoon should resign from his position over violent clashes in Aluthgama. He even tendered his letter of resignation to the opposition leader demanding the immediate resignation of the Police chief. Thewarapperuma’s letter of resignation was turned down by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.
