Sri Lanka To Share Electricity Surplus With Regional Countries

Attention has been focused on sharing electricity surplus with regional countries which is to be generated using renewable energy sources. Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific Dr. Shamshad Akhtar discussed the matter when she met Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya in Colombo recently . The executive director also commended the progress Sri Lanka has achieved in the energy field. Sri Lanka is the only country in the South Asian region that supplies electricity around the clock. 

In addition, 98 percent of the total households have electricity.

Speaking further, Dr. Shamshad Akhtar told the minister that her commission hopes to share the experiences in the energy field since being self sufficient in power is one of the essential factors for the development of a country.

In reply, Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya stated power has been supplied even to remote areas as well using renewable energy sources. Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific also invited the minister to take part in the international forum on energy development which is scheduled to be held in January next year.
