Interpol Arrest Warrant Issued Against Udayanga Weeratunga

Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne today issued an interpol arrest warrant against former Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga.

The FCID, on October 11, had reported facts on the alleged financial fraud during a MiG-27 fighter jet purchase. Accordingly the FCID has made him a suspect in the case.

The latest request was made based on this new facts report.

The Magistrate, on September 30, had rejected issuing an arrest warrant, since Weeratunga was not a suspect and he was needed only to record a statement. A court case has also not been filed on the matter, the Magistrate pointed out.

Weeratunga is thought to be living in Ukraine. Sri Lanka recently signed an extradition treaty with that country.
