No Intention To Deport Gunaratnam, Says Government

December 01, 2016

The government has no intention of deporting the Frontline Socialist Party Central Committee member Kumar Gunaratnam, Minister of Internal Affairs, Wayamba Development and Cultural Affairs S.B. Nawinne said.

He made this observation addressing the Parliament.

Gunaratnam is serving a one year prison term for violating immigration laws. Some civil activists have called for his release and the FLSP is alleging that the government is planning to deport him.

He was a former member of the JVP, and was a leader of the JVP Trincomalee unit during the 1987-89 insurrection. He later broke away from the JVP in 2011, forming the People's Struggle Movement which later became the FLSP.

Gunaratnam was abducted in 2012 and later left for Australia, where he has obtained citizenship.
