Malaysian Indian Groups Condemn Sirisena's Visit

December 13, 2016

More than 12 Indian groups in Malaysia have issued a joint statement condemning a visit by Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena to Malaysia, reported Malaysian Tamil dailies.

The groups, led by Johor Tamilar Sangam, said the current president was the acting defence minister during the last stages of the civil war between Sri Lankan forces and Tamil fighters.

The Sri Lankan government, led by then president Mahinda Rajapaksa, had been accused of committing genocide against the minority Tamils during the war.

Spokesman Ronnie Murugan, who organised the joint press conference, said the president was supposedly invited to launch a Sri Lankan food and cultural festival in Kuala Lumpur next week.

“If the visit is not cancelled, there will be protests and demonstrations by the Tamil community at the airport, the embassy and at the event itself,” he said.

So far, more than 10 police reports had been lodged against the visit, The Star reported.
