Delimitation Committee Report Delayed Again

December 15, 2016

Publication of the report compiled by the National Delimitation Committee headed by Ashoka Peries, once again has been delayed.

Report is to look into complaints arising from delimitation of new wards.

It was scheduled to be handed over to the Minister of Local Governments and Provincial Councils yesterday.

The report is expected to address the concerns and grievances of the public and political parties. A draft of the appeals investigation of the Delimitation Committee will be handed over to all political parties for perusal.

The Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils in August said the Committee completed resolving 90 per cent of the objections filed against the delimitation boundaries that were gazetted in August 2015. Over 2,000 appeals and objections were filed against the existing delimitation boundaries by various political parties, civil society groups and the public.

The Committee has requested an extension to the deadline. Accordingly the National Delimitation Committee report will be submitted on the 27th of December.

Elections Commission announced that it requires at least 90 days to complete preparations and conduct an election, after the gazette notification is issued.
