Many World Leaders Invited For UN United Nations' Wesak Day Next Year

A secretariat to monitor activities of United Nations' Wesak day celebration was declared open yesterday. 

It is situated at No. 115 Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo. Minister Dr. Wijedasa Rajapaksa graced the occasion as the chief guest. Speaking at the event, minister said number of head of states have been invited to attend the UN Wesak day celebrations. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and new General Secretary of the United Nations Antonio Gutteres are also among them. Thailand Prime Minister has already confirmed his attendance. This will be the first ever occasion a UN Wesak day ceremony will be held in Sri Lanka.

The main event will be held at the BMICH on 12th of May next year. 

Representatives from 100 countries including number of head of states will attend the ceremony. 

An international Buddhist conference will be held on the following day at Sri Dalada Maligawa. 

A special Dalada Perahera has been organized at night. 

An exposition of the sacred tooth relic will be held for a limited number of persons. 

Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakse said the proposal to declare Wesak Poya day as a holiday in other countries will be presented on the occasion.
