JO Says Sri Lanka To Be New Geopolitical Battleground

December 29, 2016

Pivithuru Hela Urumaya General Secretary Udaya Gammanpila warned yesterday that Sri Lanka is becoming a battleground where the geopolitical interests of the US, China and India will clash.

Speaking to the media, he said that the situation is so dangerous that Sri Lanka could become a new Lebanon.

He also pointed out that Hambantota port will be more important than Singapore once the Kra Canal is constructed through Thailand. He added that China and Thailand have reached an agreement on the canal, which will shorten the distance of shipping between the far east and the middle east. This will allow the ships to bypass Singapore, and the shipping routes will still go close to Hambantota, said Gammanpila.

The Chinese, he added, would never let go of such a prize.
