Minister Rejects Much Awaited Delimitation Committee’s Report

Faizer Mustapha, Minister of Local Governments and Provincial Councils refused to accept the report compiled by the National Delimitation Committee headed by Asoka Peiris today.
Minister has refused to accept the report today claiming two main party political members of the committee have not signed the demarcation report.
The publication of the report of the Committee set up to look into complaints arising from delimitation of new wards was delayed on several occasions.
The Committee attributed the delay to several issues including, opposition by various factions on the proposed boundaries and challenges in obtaining accurate information to recommend new wards for local government bodies.
However following the completion of the report, the National Delimitation Committee was slated to hand over the report to the Minister of Local Governments and Provincial Councils Faizer Mustapha this morning.
Representative of the United National Party, Attorney S. Misbah and former Governor Saliya Mathew representing the United People’s Freedom Alliance have not signed the report.
According to the Head of the Committee Asoka Peries noted that the report is legal as a majority of the committee members have signed the report.
Report has been handed over to all committee members adding that a copy of the report with the signatures of all members will be handed over to Minister Faizer Mustapha in the near future, he added.
