Sri Lanka Says No To Hybrid Courts

Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe today rejected the recommendation by the Consultation Task Force on Reconciliation Mechanisms that a 'hybrid court' should look into the alleged war crimes during the Sri Lankan civil war.

Speaking to media, Rajapakshe said that there was no need for foreign judges since Sri Lankan justice system is competent to handle such an investigation.

In addition, the participation of foreign judges is unconstitutional, he added.

The Task Force yesterday released their report saying that the court should have "a majority of national judges as well as a sufficient number of international judges" to ensure at least one foreign judge per bench in case of absences.

The idea of a hybrid court was first pushed forward by UN Human Rights Commissioner Zeid Ra'ad Al-Hussein.
