Uva PC To Seek Justice For Uva People

Chamara Sampath Dassanayake, Chief Minister of the Uva Province claimed that the council will be seeking justice from Britain for the damages and crimes it committed against Uva residents during its regime.

During a media briefing held in Badulla, Chief Minister Dassanayake stayed that over 14,000 residents of the UVA province were martyred during the Great Rebellion of 1817–18.

He further added that the council is taking steps to ensure due compensations is paid for the loss of life and property that occurred over 199 years ago.

Chief Minister also expressed his gratitude to the President over the annulment of the Gazette issued in 1818 listing 19 Wellassa heroes as traitors.

President Maithripala Sirisena last month declared the names of 19 Kandyan leaders as patriotic war heroes who fought at the Uva Wellassa rebellion in 1818 for the freedom of the Motherland by revoking the Gazette issued by English Governor Robert Brownrigg on 18th January, 1818 listing them as traitors.
