IGP N.K. Illangakoon has sought the approval of secretary to the Ministry of Law and Order regarding a request made to IGP by BASL president Upul Jayasuriya that he be provided personal security while traveling.
In response to BASL President, Ajith Wickramasekara the Staff DIG to the IGP stated that the request had been forwarded to the Secretary, Minister of Law and Order, seeking approval.
Retired Major General Nanda Mallawarachchi is the Secretary of the Ministry of Law and Order, which operates directly under President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
While expressing his displeasure over the IGP’s decision, the BASL president alleged that the IGP could have acted in accordance with the Police Ordinance and it was ridiculous to seek the Ministry Secretary’s approval regarding a simple matter.
BASL president had made police complaints alleging that he was followed by unidentified motorcyclists on his way from Hulftsdorp to his residence on July 15 and two other motorcyclists hovered around his house at Thalangama. The Police is yet to make any progress in their investigations into the complaints made by the President of the BASL.
However, speaking in Parliament, Prime Minister D M Jayaratne said that the vehicles which followed the BASL Chairman Upul Jayasuriya were unregistered.
