Usually Vociferous IGP Still Silent On Leaked Assault Video Footage: Calls For Immediate Resignation Mounting

The usually vociferous Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara has not responded to the video footage of him assaulting a lift operator at the Police headquarters in Colombo Fort that leaked online  last morning.

The incident, which had occurred on April 11, 2017 but leaked online yesterday, showed the IGP grabbing the lift operator by his shirt twice in a threatening manner and trying to hit him. It is unclear what the incident is about.

The IGP, who often shares his views on social media has been silent on the matter and has offered no explanation or justification of his acts.

Despite there being little information about the incident, social media has been relentless in branding the IGP’s behavior ‘excessive’ and calling for an inquiry. Calls for the IGP to resign have also mounted.

It is also learned that a group of parliamentarians intend to bring forwards an impeachment motion to have the IGP impeached over his conduct which they say is ‘unfit’ for a man of his stature.
