BASL Defends AG's Dept Officials: Says Allegations Against Lawyers Involved In The Bond Commission Should Be Condemned

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) yesterday defended the Attorney General's Department officials involved in the Treasury Bonds Commission saying the criticism and allegations leveled against them were unacceptable.

The AG's Department officials involved in the proceedings of the Presidential Commission on Treasury Bonds issue have come under criticism from a section of UNP MPs in the wake of former Foreign Minister Ravi Karunanayake's resignatioon.

Karunanayake himself said some officials attached to the AG's Department were acting deliberately against him to secure their promotions and other privileges.

Addressing a press conference in Colombo yesterday, BASL President U.R. de Silva said the conduct of the political authorities should be condemned.

De silva, a President's Counsel, said everyone should honour the mandate of the Presidential Commission.

He also added that unfair attacks on the AG's Department officials could result in a confidence gap between the public and the department.
