The Police Headquarters has decided to deploy the Special Task Force to ensure security until the end of the Uva Provincial Council Election according to local media reports. A team of STF members have been sent to the area to coordinate security with the local police.
This step has been taken after the Elections Commissioner requested the Police to take necessary action to prevent the possible acts of violence that can break out in the area. The decision to ask for extra protection after two politicians had threatened an elections official last Tuesday (6)
The incident happened after nominations were handed over. A former Uva Provincial Council Member Anura Vidanagamage and his brother, Parliamentarian Thenuka vidanagamage, had led a procession violating election laws.
They have threatened the official when he had tried to stop the procession.
A meeting chaired by the Elections commissioner was held yesterday (8) to discuss this matter in which the Commissioner had requested Police to bolster the security of the area. Uva Provincial Council Election will be held on September 20.
