Tense Situation In Kataragama: 63 Arrested: Sagala Instructs Police To Quell The Situation

The Police had used tear gas to quell a tense situation in the Kataraganma area, a short while ago.

The Police have also arrested 63 people, including 15 women, for protesting in an unruly manner.

The development took place in the wake of a death of a motorcyclist following a Police shooting. Soon after the incident, protests broke out in the area against the Police.

Issuing a statement on the matter, Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayaka said a CID team had been sent to Kataragama to probe the death of a motorcyclist following a Police shooting.

"One police officer has already been arrested. We urge the public to remain calm and maintain peace. Police have been instructed to work with the villagers to quell the situation," the Minister said, in a statement on Twitter.
