Schoolgirl In Ganemulla Harassed Due To HIV Fears Gets New School After Interventions By Akila And Ranjan

Social Empowerment Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake said the problem faced by a schoolgirl in the Ganemulla area due to unfounded HIV fears was solved.

"Now she [has] got a new school and also got her father a job; thanks to Education minister Akila Viraj for giving her a new good school," Ramanayake tweeted a short while ago.

A 10-year-old schoolgirl from Ganemulla complained to President Maithripala Sirisenq last month, saying she faced harassment and stigma at her school, because her mother had been diagnosed as being HIV positive.

She accused the Principal of her school of discrimination and ill-treatment.

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka also made interventions to resolve the matter during the initial stages.
