Key Diplomatic Missions Write To President Sirisena Against His Decision To Re-introduce Death Penalty After 40 Years

Diplomatic missions for EU, British, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Romania in Colombo have written a joint letter to President Maithripala Sirisena urging him to not implement death penalty in Sri Lanka.

in the letter, the diplomatic missions said it was a "worrying information" that the Sri Lankan government was working on re-introducing death penalty after a moratorium of 40 years.

They have said they "strongly and unequivocally oppose capital punishment in all circumstances."

The missions have made it clear that the death penalty will be incompatible with human dignity and does not have any proven deterrent effect.

They have requested President Sirisena to maintain moratorium on death penalty and uphold Sri Lanka's opposition to capital punishment.
