Constitutional Council Meeting Currently Underway To Make Final Decision On President's Nominee For CJ Post

A meeting of the Constitutional Council is currently underway to make the final decision on the new Chief Justice. 

President Maithripala Sirisena has nominated the name of Supreme Court Judge Nalin Perera for the position and sent for the approval of the Constitutional Council. 

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan, Chamal Rajapaksa, Thalatha Atukorale, Mahinda Samarasinghe and Bimal Ratnayake are the political members of the council. 

Dr. Jayantha Dhanapala, Javid Yusuf and N. Sivakumar represent the civil society. Making the final decision on the  new Chief Justice would be the first official task of the newly appointed members of the Council. 

The final decision of the council is extended to be conveyed to President Sirisena this evening and the new Chief Justice is likely to swear-in tomorrow.
