Anura Kumara Dissanayake Says JVP Will Use Every Opportunity To Inside And Outside Parliament To Defeat "Constitutional Coup"

November 05, 2018

JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said his party would use every opportunity to defeat the 'constitutional coup' happened in the country, last Friday.

Addressing a press conference at the JVP headquarters in Pelawatte, Battaramulla, a short while ago, Dissanayake said, "We will fight in Parliament and we will fight on the street. We will use every opportunity to defeat the 'constitutional coup' engineered by the President."

"It can be the inaugural session of Parliament or the budget vote - but all our MPs will vote as one to defeat the coup," Dissanayake said, explaining the JVP's position on the current political crisis.

"The defeat of the budget will not result in the dissolution of Parliament. But it will lead to the dissolution of the government that presents the budget and allow a different group, with a Parliamentary majority, to form a government and present a new government. Our Constitution is very clear on that," the JVP leader explained.

"However," he added, " we will not support any particular group in Parliament to form new governments."

He said the JVP would not side with the UNP to form a majority government, but would work with any party to defeat what he termed the current "illegitimate government."
