Talks Between MR And JVP End In Stalemate: MR Says Amendments To 13A, Electoral Reforms Needed Before Abolishing Executive Presidency

The discussion between Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa and the JVP yesterday ended inconclusively as Rajapaksa did not express willingness to support the 20th Amendment to the Constitution, presented to Parliament by the JVP. 

Rajapaksa, however, had said he agreed "in principle" with the evolution of the Executive Presidency. 

The Opposition Leader had pointed out that the abolition of the Executive Presidency with amendment to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution and electoral reforms. 

The proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution does not look at areas highlighted by the Opposition Leader. 

Rajapaksa had opined that the abolition of the Executive Presidency without other reforms would lead to a weak government. 

As a result of this stalemate, the discussions between the two parties ended without a decision, informed political sources said. 

Apart from Rajapaksa, UPFA MPs Dinesh Gunawardena and Dullas Alahapperuma also joined the discussion in behalf of the Joint Opposition.  

The JVP delegation was led by party leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake while Vijitha Herath and Sunil Hanudetti also joined the discussion representing the Marxist party.
