President Threatens To Declare National Day Of Mourning If Parliament Passes Act Against Enactment Of Death Penalty

President Maithripala Sirisena said he would declare a national mourning day if Parliament passed an Act against the death penalty.

Addressing a meeting at Walawa, President Sirisena said he was aware of reports that plans were a foot to pass an Act in Parliament against his move to reimpose death penalty.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has stated that his party was against the move to end the moratorium on the death penalty.

UNP MP Bandula Lal Bandarigoda has presented a private MP motion in Parliament against ending the moratorium on death plenty.

The Joint Opposition and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna have also expressed similar sentiments against the move.
