Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will step down from office after making a statement this evening, informed political sources said.

With Wickremesinghe's resignation, the Cabinet of ministers will be automatically dissolved, they added.

Wickremesinghe has discussed the transition of power with newly-elected President Rajapaksa.

It is learnt that President Rajapaksa will appoint a15-member Cabinet will be appointed until the next Parliamentary election.

Gotabhaya Rajapaksa can dissolve the current Parliament at his discretion after March 01, 2020.
