Bangladesh Captain Shakib Al Hasan to Enter Political Arena, Nominated to Contest Bangladesh's 12th Parliamentary Elections from Ruling Party

November 27, 2023

In a surprising turn of events, Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan has thrown his hat into the political ring, confirming his nomination for the country's 12th parliamentary elections. The announcement comes after he received the backing of the ruling Awami League, and he is set to contest from the Magura-1 constituency, his home district. The polls are scheduled for January 7, 2024.

While the cricketer is currently recuperating from a finger injury sustained during a World Cup match against Sri Lanka on November 6, his political aspirations seem undeterred. The timing of his return to the field remains uncertain, leaving fans and political observers curious about his dual commitments in the coming weeks.

Shakib's entry into politics follows in the footsteps of former Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza, who successfully transitioned to a political career, becoming a Member of Parliament during the previous elections from Narail. Despite Mashrafe's continued involvement in community activities in his hometown, Shakib, known for his cricketing prowess, has not previously ventured into the realm of public life.

The cricket star's decision to contest the elections adds a new dimension to his already illustrious career. Shakib had previously declared that he would step down as the ODI captain but remains at the helm of the T20I squad. As Bangladesh gears up for a tour of New Zealand from December 11 to 31, comprising six white-ball matches, the question of Shakib's participation in the T20Is towards the end of the tour remains uncertain.
