Injunction Order Against All Ceylon General Ports Employees Union Extended by Court Preventing Union Action

An injunction preventing the All-Ceylon General Ports Employees’ Union from initiating a work-to-rule campaign has been further extended. Colombo Additional District Judge Chamari Weerasuriya issued the extension until January 23 during today's court session.

The All-Ceylon General Ports Employees’ Union had initially planned to launch the work-to-rule campaign on December 28, 2023, with a primary demand for an increase in salaries for port workers. However, on December 27, 2023, the Colombo District Court intervened, issuing an enjoining order against the trade unions associated with the Ports Authority. The court order aimed to prevent any token strikes that could potentially disrupt the seamless operations of the bustling Colombo Port.

During the court proceedings today, Judge Weerasuriya decided to maintain the injunction, citing the necessity to protect the smooth functioning of the Colombo Port and to avoid any adverse impact on trade and commerce.
