“Online Safety Bill is not a Sudden Piece of Legislation: Drafting Process of Law Began in 2016”: State Minister

Speaking in Parliament, State Minister Shantha Bandara shed light on the prolonged process of formulating the Online Safety Bill, emphasizing its evolution since 2016 and countering opposition claims of hindrance.

The State Minister revealed that the bill's inception dates back to 2016 when it was first presented to the cabinet. Over the years, it has undergone comprehensive development, incorporating feedback and insights from various stakeholders.

Bandara said the “meticulous steps” were taken to ensure the bill's thorough examination, addressing concerns related to the regulation of social media platforms. He underscored that the bill has followed the necessary protocols, involving multiple stages of scrutiny and revision.

The State Minister expressed bewilderment at the opposition's attempts to impede the progress of the Online Safety Bill, particularly when it has adhered to established legislative procedures. He urged transparency and cooperation, emphasizing the importance of enacting laws to regulate social media for the greater benefit of the public.
