Estate Community Representatives Forge Social Agreement with Main Opposition Party for Livelihood Upliftment

In a new move aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of estate communities, several representatives joined hands with the main Opposition, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party, in what they termed as new social agreement.


The agreement, inked at the Opposition Leader’s Office in Colombo, saw the participation of key figures, including SJB Leader MP Sajith Premadasa, who vowed to spearhead efforts for comprehensive upliftment.


MP Premadasa pledged to institute a Presidential Task Force under an SJB-led government, dedicated to addressing the multifaceted challenges confronting the estate communities. These challenges encompassed infrastructural inadequacies, economic hardships, social development, and political representation.


The SJB Leader affirmed the party's commitment to safeguarding the rights of both up-country and low-country estate communities.


The signing ceremony witnessed the presence of notable figures representing various communities. Among them were Leader of the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) MP Mano Ganesan, Leader of the National Union of Workers (NUW) Palani Digambaram, and Leader of the Up-Country People’s Front (UCPF) V. Radhakrishnan.
