Two Arrested for Aiding and Abetting Poisoning of Detained Suspects in Aduruppuveediya Police Station

February 16, 2024

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) has  apprehended two individuals on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 15, for their alleged involvement in aiding and abetting the poisoning of two suspects detained at the Aduruppuveediya police station. The suspects, aged 25 and 32 and residents of Wattala and Colombo 13, were also found in possession of over 23 grams of methamphetamine ('Ice').

The arrests follow a poisoning incident that occurred on February 07, where two detainees fell critically ill after consuming a packet of milk provided by a visitor at the Aduruppuveediya police station. The victims were initially held in connection with a shooting incident in Jinthupitiya on January 25.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the crime was orchestrated on the orders of a notorious criminal currently evading authorities overseas. The CCD is actively pursuing further inquiries into the incident.
The sequence of events unfolded when a girlfriend of one of the detainees visited them on February 07, followed by another visitor who handed them two buns and a packet of milk. Subsequent examination of CCTV footage revealed the suspected visitor's activities before arriving at the police station, confirming their involvement as a drug addict.

In response to the incident, three police officers linked to the Aduruppuveediya police station have been interdicted. The Acting Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the station, a Reserve Officer, and the security police officer on duty at the station's gate during the visit were all removed from their positions pending further investigation.
