Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) General Secretary, Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero, has been sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment for defamatory comments made against Islam eight years ago.
The verdict was handed down by Colombo High Court Judge Aditya Patabendige on Thursday (March 28), alongside a fine of Rs. 100,000 imposed on the monk. Gnanasara Thero faced allegations of making derogatory remarks against Islam during a 2016 media briefing concerning the Kuragala ancient Buddhist monastery, a move deemed to have caused harm to national and religious harmony.
