Bribery Commission Takes Legal Action Against Cabraal and Four Others Over Treasury Bills Purchase

Legal action has been initiated by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) against five individuals, including former Central Bank Governor Ajith Nivard Cabraal.

The CIABOC filed the case in the Colombo High Court under Case No. HCB 271/2024 on March 26, following investigations into a complaint lodged by former MP Sujeewa Senasinghe. The complaint pertained to the Central Bank's acquisition of Treasury Bills issued by the Government of Greece in 2012 amid the country's severe financial crisis. Senasinghe alleged that despite being aware of Greece's financial turmoil, the purchase led to a loss exceeding Rs. 1.84 billion for the Sri Lankan government.

Alongside Cabraal, legal action has been taken against Kankanamge Gamage Don Dharmasena Deerasinghe, Bendarage Don Wasantha Ananda Silva, Chandrasiri Jayasinghe Panditha Siriwardena, and Harankaha Arachchilage Karunaratne.
