Government Accelerates Free Rice Distribution for Low-Income Families

The Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils, and Local Government has instructed all District Secretaries to expedite the distribution of free rice to low-income families.
Following approval from the Cabinet of Ministers, President Ranil Wickremesinghe's proposal to provide 20 kg of rice per family for two months has been greenlit. Distribution will occur at the Divisional Secretariat level, targeting various beneficiary groups including 'Aswesuma' recipients, Welfare Benefits Board-selected individuals, Samurdhi beneficiaries, elderly, disabled, and chronically ill persons. District Secretaries are tasked with procuring 54,800 metric tons of rice, with the treasury facilitating necessary provisions for the initiative.
