Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday said that the JVP would not allow President Mahinda Rajapaksa to compete in the presidential election for a third time.
Speaking to BBC Sandeshaya yesterday, the JVP Leader said that the JVP will rally the country’s citizenry against what they termed as the ‘illegal’ presidential election which is rumoured to take place in January.
“We are organizing campaigns island-wide to educate the people on injustices committed by the ruling party. This is clear misuse of power; we intend to give a clear understanding to the people about the constitution of the country”, Dissanayake said. The party has a;ready conducted several seminars across the country to educate JVP supporters and activists on Presidential election.
Dissanayake maintained that members of the UPFA government has become the puppets of the 18th Amendment and the ‘family centric’ politics.
The JVP Leader denied all claims that the JVP started protesting against the presidential election after the Uva Provincial Council election, in which the JVP was only able to secure two seats. He added that the JVP
However, the JVP Leader said that the JVP first needed the consent of the people before taking this matter to the country's judiciary.
It is widely speculated that the JVP will boycott the forthcoming presidential election citing its "illegitimacy". However, JVP General secretary Tilvin Silva told Asian Mirror yesterday that no final decision has been made in this regard
