SLTB Sued For Defaulting Rs. 4000 Million

Filing a writ application before Court of Appeal, a trade union attached to the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna (MEP) alleged that the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has defaulted a payment of Rs.4000 million to the SLTB employees since May 2010.

The four petitioners representing the Samastha Lanka Motor Sevaka Samithiya filed the writ petition urging the Court to issue a writ of mandamus against the Commissioner General of Labour, ordering to initiate legal proceedings under the provisions of the EPF Act against the SLTB and its Chairman S.D. Welgama.

They stated that about 36000 employees of SLTB have been affected due to this unlawful conduct of the SLTB. They moved court to vindicate the rule of law and take measures to stop the unlawful conduct of the respondents occasioned by noncompliance and violation of the EPF act.

The Court of Appeal bench comprising of Justice Vijith Malalgoda and Justice A.H.M.D. Nawaz today granted the respondents time to file an objection and the matter to be heard on December 8.
