The Jathika Hela Urumaya – which is at loggerheads with the government over several contentious matters – is to meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees for a make-or-break meeting this afternoon.
The meeting, according to highly placed sources, will decide the political future of the JHU and its support to President Rajapaksa at the presidential election.
He meeting will also attended by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, UPFA General Secretary Susil Premjayantha and SLFP Treasurer Dullas Alahapperuma. At the meeting, the ruling party’s response to the proposals presented by the JHU will be handed over to the JHU delegation.
The JHU Central Committee had a special meeting yesterday to discuss its way forward. Following the meeting, the committee decided to make a final decision over its support to the government after the meeting with the President today.
Meanwhile, speaking to Asian Mirror, JHU Legal Advisor Udaya Gammanpila – who was in hospital on Monday to receive medical treatment - said the JHU delegation would also include its Parliamentarian Athuraliye Rathana thera.
Rathana Thera is the convener of the Pivithuru Hetak organization which is pushing for a constitutional amendment before the presidential election.
The JHU presented a list of proposals to the senior members of the SLFP on October 21 which included the demands made by JHU Senior Parliamentarian Athuraliye Rathana thera at the ‘Pivithuru Hetak’ programme.
