Arjuna Ranatunga, Parliamentarian of the Democratic National Alliance , has pledged to offer his support to former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kunaratunga or to UNP Leadership Council Chairman Karu Jayasuriya, sources from the opposition told Asian Mirror.
Ranatunga, who has now distanced himself from his erstwhile leader former Army commander Sarath Fonseka, took part in the common opposition rally which took place in Colombo on Wednesday.
However, Ranatunga's first choice is former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga who brought the former Cricket captain into active politics. It was during Kunaratunga's time that he became a Parliamentarian for the first time after contesting under the SLFP ticket.
Meanwhile, Ranatunga had told several politicians of the opposition that he was willing to support UNP Leadership Council Chairman Karu Jayasuriya too.
After Ranatunga took part in the common opposition rally on Wednesday, certain media reports claimed that Ranatinga's name has also been proposed as a potential common candidate of the opposition.
However, this was flatly denied by a key spokesperson of the opposition who is very much involved in the finding-common-candidate game.
Addressing the rally, Ranatunga said, one does not have to worry about the name of the common candidate. "Already there are mud-slinging campaigns targeting potential common candidates of the opposition. There is no issue about the name of the common candidate. First of all we need to arrive at a common agreement," Ranatunga said.
